European Business Equipment Outlook 2026 insights

Three shifts reshaping European equipment strategy.

The European Business Equipment Outlook 2026 surveyed over 1,000 senior decision-makers across 11 markets. Three structural shifts emerged most clearly from the data – each one challenging long-held assumptions about how equipment should be financed, managed and used. Explore the snapshots below, or access the full report for the underlying analysis and sector-by-sector breakdowns.

Ownership is under pressure

Structural shifts are challenging traditional capex models

Technology cycles are now shorter than investment cycles, capital is locked up in assets that may be obsolete before they pay back, and uncertainty is slowing decision-making across boardrooms. 95% of business leaders say equipment becomes obsolete faster than before, and 87% say capital lock-up has constrained growth. The question is no longer whether to own – but when ownership still makes sense.

Equipment decisions now go beyond purchase

Lifecycle complexity is reshaping procurement decisions

End-of-life management, regulatory pressure and ESG accountability are turning equipment strategy into a lifecycle strategy. 87% of businesses find end-of-life asset management challenging, and 68% say lifecycle considerations now shape procurement decisions. From plan and purchase to return and recycle, managing equipment is a continuous responsibility – not a one-off transaction.

The shift to usage is real – but not absolute

Adoption is growing, but remains uneven

45% of European businesses already finance at least a quarter of their equipment through usage-based models, and 53% expect that share to hold or grow. The drivers are clear: better performance, lower capital risk and easier access to newer technology. But preference for ownership, limited supplier options and perceived cost still hold some businesses back. The shift isn’t away from ownership – it’s towards balance and flexibility.
